Centrelink Waiting Periods After Redundancy: What You Need to Know

Being made redundant is stressful enough without the added complexity of Centrelink waiting periods. Many Australians are surprised to discover they can't immediately access JobSeeker โ€” two separate waiting periods can delay payments by weeks or months.

The Two Key Waiting Periods

1. Income Maintenance Period (IMP)

If you receive leave entitlements, redundancy pay, or payment in lieu of notice, Services Australia converts this into a waiting period. The IMP is calculated by dividing the total payout by your former ordinary weekly earnings. For example, $25,000 severance รท $1,635/week (average weekly earnings) = approximately 15 weeks IMP.

2. Liquid Assets Waiting Period (LAWP)

The LAWP applies if your liquid assets (bank accounts, shares, cash) exceed a certain threshold at the time you claim:

SituationLow ThresholdHigh Threshold
Single, no dependants$5,500$11,000
Couple or single with dependants$11,000$22,000

If liquid assets are below the low threshold, no LAWP applies. Between low and high threshold: a partial LAWP of up to 13 weeks may apply. Above the high threshold: maximum 13-week waiting period.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Centrelink waiting period after redundancy?
Two waiting periods may apply: the Income Maintenance Period (IMP) โ€” based on severance pay โ€” and the Liquid Assets Waiting Period (LAWP) โ€” based on savings. The IMP is calculated as redundancy pay รท ordinary weekly earnings. Both can run concurrently. Always apply immediately โ€” the waiting period starts from your separation date.
Do I have to wait if I was made redundant?
If you were genuinely made redundant, a shorter IMP may apply compared to voluntary resignation. However, if you received a redundancy payout, the IMP still applies based on the amount received. Genuine redundancies do not attract the 4-week seasonal worker provision that some voluntary resignations trigger.
What is the JobSeeker rate in Australia in 2025?
From 20 September 2025, JobSeeker is $762.70/fortnight ($19,830/year) for single people with no dependants. Couples receive $695.30/fortnight each. These rates are indexed twice yearly in March and September.
